Welcome to the Carlstadt Police Department web site

This site is designed to give a brief history and understanding of your police department.

Since the Borough of Carlstadt was founded in June of 1894, there has always been a need for police to keep the peace. Like any other organization in America, there is always someone in charge and the Carlstadt Police Department is no different. In 1907, Charles Schmidt was the first police chief appointed by the borough. Since this time there have been many changes in technology and laws that have helped to shape the police department into what it has become today, and we will continue to grow and expand our skills under our current Chief, Thomas Nielsen.

We are more than the traditional police department. In addition to our patrol unit, we also have officers a part of the following: New Jersey Rapid Deployment Force, the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, the Bergen County Rapid Deployment Team and the Bergen County Computer Crimes Unit.

On Thursday November 16, 2017 Rashawn Vaughan and Thomas Hansen of Passaic, NJ were arrested for violations of Burglary, Conspiracy to Commit Burglary, Theft of Movable Property and Resisting Arrest by Flight.
An off-duty police officer notified headquarters that Vaughan and Hansen were walking northbound on Jefferson Street near Fritsch Avenue pulling on car door handles in an attempt to find unlocked vehicles. As the two suspects continued onto Fritsch Avenue, responding patrol officers observed them and attempted to make contact with them. Instead of complying with orders to stop, Vaughan and Hansen ran away and hid within a residential back yard in the nearby Borough Wood-Ridge.
K-9 from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office responded and successfully tracked the location where Vaughan and Hansen which led their apprehension. Vaughan and Hansen were processed and remanded to the Bergen County Jail to await their bail hearing.
The Carlstadt Police Department would like to thank the Wood-Ridge Police Department and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with establishing a perimeter and locating Vaughan and Hansen.
